It's not that it grows to a certain length, it's that it grows for a certain period of time. Each follicle produces a hair for a certain period of time, then the hair falls out and it starts over. It doesn't matter if that hair is down to your butt or you just cut it and its an inch long. There will be a limit to how long your hair gets--if your follicles will only make hair long enough to make 4 feet, and then fall out, your hair will never be longer than 4 feet--but as different follicles are at different points in the cycle it doesn't all happen at once.
This is assuming your hair grows to its maximum length, though. Your hair can be pulled out, cut, or break off before it reaches that length.

Scientifically your hair grows 1/4 inch a month. Many things can effect its growth, hormones, diet, heredity, illness, allergies, environment and many more. There are stages also, these vary from person to person, your hair will reach a certain length (which varies also) and appear to "quit growing''. If there is enough time it will grow past the plateau. In many cases depending on when you get your hair cut can effect also, I believe during the new moon is the best.

Your hair always keeps growing. I've been told it even continues to grow after you're dead, but I haven't personally checked this out. Animal hair grows continuously too, but it falls out before it gets too long. We give sheep and poodles haircuts, but they could get by without it. Humans just have to be different. Their hair will grow down to their knees before it falls out.

Ironically, your hair continues to grow even after death.....your hair is made of dead cells, however, I would never call your dear mother a liar as it is possible that she has extremely brittle hair ....if it is very dry and/or thin.....it is very likely, without excessive care and attention, that it would break and the length could vary ....God Bless you and your dear mother... : )

I've read each response carefully and I admit they're valid and truthful, but I'm with your mom. I never got my hair to grow much past my shoulders. It became thicker and poufy but not longer.

everybody's hair is different. i know i girl who grew her hair up to her feet...and if she cuts it she gets sick or smth, wierd..but thats a different story. a friend of mine, her hair wouldnt grow any longer than the middle of her back. she so wants to have her hair up to her hip but it just wouldnt grow. we grew our hair at the same time, and her's still the same length while mine keeps growing and growing. i think it depends on genetics.
