I have a NVIDIA nForce chipset ASUS motherboard with onboard GeForce 6150. I'm looking to upgrade graphics performance ... affordably. I'm assuming that I should be looking at PCI-Express cards, since my motherboard supports this.

The only must is DVI output.

Since you are on Vista, you could consider the most affordable DX10 card, the 8500GT or the better 8600GT.
BUT if "affordable" is really top on your list, get the 7300GT ddr3. It has both DVI and VGA output.
