The first hit on a Google Web search (Life of Pi by Yann Martel, complete with comma and not even bothering with " ") was
http://www.reviewsofbooks.com/life_of_pi/
labeled as "Links to multiple reviews of Life of Pi by Yann Martel." I haven't read any of those 10 reviews, but the chances are very high that if YOU do, you'll find at least one answer to your question!
*Ideally,* reading the novel itself would let you answer the question; but if it's not your KIND of novel, that might actually fail. (I unhesitatingly apply this to myself--and I got my B.A. in English!)
Still, you should read the thing if only so you know whether you agree with any of the reviewers!
