CCLEANER
http://www.ccleaner.com/ Cleans the junk files
http://filehippo.com/download_comodo/ Freeware firewall
http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/ Freeware antivirus
http://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?rh1dkyd2 Test your security
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=jv16
This is one of the best registry editor I have found and is recommended by Fred Langa and he’s been around for quite some time. It is freeware. I have not used this one but when the trial runs out on the new version if I don’t buy it then I will try this one.
http://www.macecraft.com/downloads/
This is the new version and it works great. Once you get your hard drive cleaned out, defragging your registry will make your pc run like new, just download and save to disk. The desktop is handy or my documents. Defrag your C drive and then run scandisk. Run Ccleaner at you can download
Next install the antivirus. I like to unplug the dsl or what ever you are running or disable your nic card or modem. Avast will ask if you want to schedule a boot scan click on yes. If there is a viruses choose send to virus chest you can work with it there. I have a hp that was given to me and I just got it running. I put some more ram and a second hard drive and when I ran the boot scan believe it or not Avast found 6024 viruses, Trojans, worms ad ware generators and all kinds of mal ware But the fire wall works so good none was getting out. Then do the registry and always check the files that are chosen and if you don’t know what the file are then don’t delete them. This program asks if you want to back up the registry. I always do and if there is a problem you can access safe mode by tapping f8 right after start up and get to the backup. There is an uninstall tool and a tool that lets you decide what programs you want to start with ,my boot time went from 3 minuets to less than a minuet. There are 23 tools on just this program alone. You will have to remove your present firewall and antivirus or they will conflict. If you have McAfee then you will more than likely need to use the uninstaller to take it out. I wish I had it when I removed that program. I think that they have a tool on their website. Install the firewall now It will ask your permission on everything ,this is just the learning mode and that will take a bit of time but it will settle down. OK now it’s time for Shields Up, just install and run it’s very straight forward and easy to use. You could see if the programs you have are doing the job for you. Well good luck and feel free to email me if you have questions.

Space? Double-click My Computer, then double-click the C: Drive. From there you can see the different folders/sizes. (Alternatively:Start-->All Programs-->Accessories-->Windows Explorer)
Malware/grayware/viruses?:
http://housecall.antivirus.com
Unecessary processes? Start-->Run
Type msconfig and hit Enter. Click the radio-button that says Selective Startup, then on the top choose the Startup tab. It will show you a list of the things starting when you boot Windows. I can't tell you which ones to leave checked. Make SURE you do not disable/prevent your anti-virus/spyware software from loading. But if you look at the program, and then check the file path, you should most likely be able to tell what it is for. Or check the name of the process here:
http://www.processlibrary.com
Once finished, select OK, and it will prompt you to restart your machine. Reboot, and when a little window pops up about System Configuration Utility, select the little check box for "do not...", and hit Enter.
Good luck!

40 GB hard drive is okay and kinda roomy.
The 256 MB ram is one of the immediate problems with it that I can see.
Processes.
Press Ctrl Alt Delete and look at the processes.
Type their name on this site.
http://www.processlibrary.com/
You can also see on there how much of the computer's power goes onto what job its doing.
You can check how much of the memory is being sucked up to see if that is a problem. (Personally the Ram is a big choke point for a 2.4 GHz computer)-Like giving einstein ADD.
(Anyway if your comp is not brand new. it may be one of many other things)
Virus, Worm, Spyware, Adware,
you may want to check if somone else uses your comp and downloads porn and may have downloaded viruses with it?
Usually pornsites will send you viruses etc.
Windows Defender if you have Authentic Version of Windows you can download it from microsoft for free.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
When it was brand new was it faster? Did it recently Slow Down? Did you download/install anything.
Do you have, Firewall/ Anti Spyware or Anti Virus programs.
Are you the only user for the computer or does someone else use it?

You have a reasonably fast CPU and no RAM to run anything. 256MB is almost bare minimum for running XP alone without any other processes running.
Upgrade the RAM, or your computer will speed along like a turtle instead of a hare.

I think you need to upgrade your RAM, upgrade to 512mb is good but 1gb is better.
To find out which folder bigger size, you'll have to right click on every folder, go to properties and you can check the size there. Also you can compressed several files/folder to minimize the size.
