Plastic zippers are a bane to mankind, especially if they go hand in hand with kids jackets. If you sew or, if you have a friend that sews, ask him/her to replace the zipper with a metal one, a good sturdy one that will last. I mention man/woman because I am a man and sew, taught by my wife of 50 years and love it.

Maybe one of the teeth isn't broken. if you can always just pull it apart, then the plastic is worn. The other part of the other answer, replace it, is correct. sorry to say.
