Addiction is an excuse for people that are too weak to take charge of there own actions. It takes will power and strength. Then you can stop using anything! I believe if you want to do something then do it. Don’t make an excuse for why you can’t. It lies only on your head if you had failed.

Agree or disagree with me? Why?

There has been many times in my life where I have failed. And yes I even used to do drugs. But I quit cold turkey and am doing fine now. I blame no one but myself for my own shortcomings.

I agree totally,"you can do anything you set your mind to,you're future is wide open."My12th grade English teacher wrote that in my yearbook.

disagree. it's obvious you are a person who sees in black and white, and functions in absolute-type thinking.

there are many reasons why ppl cannot break addictions themselves. if there is a strong phyisical addiction to a substance, the person cannot simply stop w/o having serious problems during withdrawl. many ppl need to be taught a new way to deal with life and situations. there are kids who grew up with addict parents and they don't know any other way.

i have worked with developmentally challenged addicts. they have an entirely different thought process, and it takes a lot of work to get them sober, because they don't know right from wrong. you can't rationalize with them, they just don't get it.

in my county right now, the mental health system is so overloaded they are not taking on any new clients. where does that leave the rest of the ppl who need help?

there may come a time in your life when you fail, and you are going to need someone who has empathy. then you might start seeing the grey between the black and white.

I agree..but only provisionally. A person who is an addict has to choose to change him or her self. And most often, they have to hit rock bottom first.

Some people can quit an addiction by simple will power (like quitting smoking "cold turkey").

But others need help, because they can't do it on there own. Actually, for somethings (like cocaine) I think one can only find healing with help...but they have to choose to accept the help first.

agree to a certain extent

when your body gets used to things, whether they be physical or mental it can be painful to withdraw completely. the pain can be physical (like drug addictions) or emotional (like being addicted to someone). i'm not sure which is harder to overcome though.

it's not laziness if you can't give up something easily, nor is it a weakness. it's probably just a lack of experience and after some time you can learn things about yourself and how to overcome anything. that's what councellers are for - to speed up the learning process and guide you. we can't expect to be able to do everything ourselves. some people find it harder than others, but eventually i think you're right, if we put our minds to it we should be able to conquer anything. but it's not always the case and should not be viewed as a weakness.

i agree on the part where you said it takes will power.

however when it comes to drugs it is not only a mental thing but a physical thing. withdrawls can cause delusions, hallucinations, fatigue, vomiting and even seizures. so in that case it not only calls for will power but for rehab.

Agree. Some people are too stubborn & lazy to make a commitment.
