We have preschool which is optional, and usually for 3-5 year olds (most will have separate classes for 3/4 year olds and 4/5 year olds).
Then elementary school (the first part of compulsory education). Includes kindergarten and then 1st grade up to 5th grade or sometimes 6th grade (so, ages 5-11 or 5-12).
Middle school/junior high is 6th-8th or sometimes just 7th and 8th grade (ages 11 or 12 to 14)
High school is 9th-12th grade (ages 14-18) and we call these four years freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior year).
Then after graduating, we either enter the workforce, join the military, or go to university. A lot of people go to university right after high school, but some people work for a few years and put off university till they're a little older.

It really depends where exactly you go in America because alot of school districts have a different but very similiar structure. I think it'd be best to describe my school experience as I grew up.
Primary schools aren't as common but my first school was one, it had Pre-Kindergarden up to the 3rd grade (Note that there are 12 grades to graduate with a high school diploma and kindergarden isnt 1st grade). Then there was a intermediate school for 4th and 5th grade. Alot of people may not be familiar with the primary and intermediate school I believe they are rare. I then moved to an elementary that had Pre-Kindergarden - 4th Grade. Next was junio high 5th-8th grade. Then High School 9th-12th grade. Now im at a 4 year University.
There are numerous private schools that parents can enroll their children in that are more expensive and specific prep schools for a specific field of study.
We have numerous options for after high school study. There are community colleges which are cheap and often 2 year schools where you will earn a associates degree. There are also technical schools, usually 2 year schools as well, that will provide a more hands on training for specic areas such as working on computers or a mechanic. Then there are Universities where you can earn a Bachelors, Masters, and a Ph. D.
I know my respons was kinda broad, but I hope it helps.

Our school starts exactly the same:
Preschool, Kindergarten, then grades 1-5 (Elementary), grades 6-8 (Middle), and grades 9-12 (High)... and in some communities they do split these up slightly and add an intermediate school(usu. between elementary and middle)... then off to college, vocational school, or work.... hopefully!!
