It was invented by a number of scientists for the United States during the Manhattan Project of World War II. Simultaneously, German and Soviet scientists were also trying to produce the atomic bomb. I don't think we can say that one particular person invented the atom bomb as it was a culmination of years of research by a fairly large number of physicists, chemists, and engineers.
