I think that the Golden Raspberry Award people ("The Razzies", to which I assume you're referring.) base their votes on the RESULT onscreen, rather than the method that goes into a performance.

Maybe an actor did the best they could with the material, but if part of a colossally awful film, they could be part of a "sweep"

For instance, for 2003 Ben Affleck "won" for GIGLI, "beating" Ashton Kutcher in his trifecta of bad films that year. On his worst day, Ben Affleck is probably better than Ashton on his best; but GIGLI was so awful, and the characters so terrible..well, you get the idea. For that matter, he probably won just for his character having that irritating name.

I think what you are referring to is "The Razzie" award and it is presented to what the critics deemed the worst performance/role for an actor/actress.

There is no way for an actor/actress to know for sure a role is a stinker until they see the finished product, and even then, it is subjective. Yes, Halle Berry won a Razzie for "Cat Woman" and Sharon Stone for "Basic Instinct 2". Does that mean the are untalented, no; it just means the roles they were given to portray were poorly conceived or appeared to be poorly executed due to poor editing.

best actor is a prize going to the person who acted out a particularly difficult role really well, showing a lot of acting ability and talent...

worst actor is the opposite - those who win did a really bad job at acting out a relatively easy role making it seem like they had/have very little acting ability or talent.

Just what it says. Halle Berry showed up to claim hers for Catwoman, which showed a lot of class I think. Surely you know there are some awful films out there.
