The Rolling Stones because they took rock and roll a few steps further than the Beatles ever dared to. The Beatles gave parents migranes with their long hair and loud guitars, but when the Rolling Stones hit the scene with Mick's gyrations and sexual lyrics, parents had heart attacks. Remember at the time the Stones became popular, songs like "Let's Spend the Night Together" and "Brown Sugar" were taboo.

RUSH - one of the most talented bands to ever pick up instruments. Also a major influence on any serious about playing music in a rock band. They have rocked on for over thirty years and don't look to be slowing down anytime soon. Other bands were around before, more pupular, or maybe even sold more albums (although I doubt it), but none were as talented as Geddy Lee , Alex Lifeson, or Neil Peart.

I'd have to go with led zeppelin.
Do you have any idea how much more talented Led Zeppelin was than the bands of today???
If you look at tablature for most of the bands today, and compare it to the bands of yesterday, the difficulty gap is just unreal!!
Zep could disputed between a few other bands from that era (e.g. black sabbath, lynyrd skynyrd), but popularity is the tiebreaker i guess.
