I used to try all those tricks like yawning, gum, etc. Now I use earplanes - http://www.cirrushealthcare.com/EarPlanes-C8.aspx . They are plugs that go in your ear and consist of a hypoallergenic silicone ear plug and a ceramic pressure regulator. As the cabin pressure changes, they permit air to flow in and out of your ear and they prevent that painful pressure from building up. I've been using them for about 4 years, most recently 2 weeks ago when I had to travel while sick with a bad cold (stuffed up, etc.). They make a HUGE difference. They're cheap, you can use them for 2 or 3 flights, and get them at most drug stores (and often at airport stores now but not so cheap then!).

1 hour before your flight, use Afrin nasal spray (over the counter) in the pharmacy, Afrin shrinks the nasal membranes which connects to your inner, and middle ear, called your Eustachian tube. The pressure of the cabin makes your eardrums suck in towards the inner ear (innerside of eardrum). That is why you feel the urge to pop your ears. chewing gum upon take-off will keep ears from clogging, make sure that you do not have anykind of ear infection, it will make it worse. (the pain)
The afrin will also shrink the inflamed area of the eustachian tube, so the pressure is released...i live with a medical professional

U can put some cotton in ur ear, it is preferable before flying and before landing also. It is something to block ears like some wear during rock concert when the music is too heavy or even while swimming ...sorry can't get the real word for it :-)) but just to stuff some cotton in ur ear'll do ...

Chew gum during take off and landings. It helps with the pressure in your ears. Yawning or moving your jaw around also helps.

My roommate has this same issue. Our remedy for it is chewing gum. This will make your ears pop constantly which will prevent earaches from the pressure...it will also prevent sinus problems from the flight too.

you may no longer combat nature. anybody has to pass, even on a airplane. in keeping with probability the airplane is quite no longer finished and you may ask for an aisle seat once you examine in. don't be shy, that's a protracted flight and a super variety of persons would be moving around purely for the pastime. do no longer drink some hours earlier the flight and use the washing room on the terminal purely earlier you board. delight in Rio and don't think of appropriate to the washing room. :>)

I've had problems with this for years. One thing that helps is to use a nasal decongestant before boarding the plane.
