What do people mean when....?

they say he/she is my 2nd or 3rd cousin once/twice removed, how is someone removed?

ok it'll get confusing but here goes: you dad's first cousin is your second cousin once removed. his child is your 3rd cousin twice removed. It reffers to how far on the family tree they are from your nuclar family.
