Why not just add the sidebars to the background image? Make it 1600 pixels wide and center it. Then you won't have to fiddle with how Firefox stacks backgrounds differently from IE.

This problem is a downside to using WYSIWYG programs such as Dreamweaver: You don't have a real web designer looking at your markup.
