Braces are generally put on by first cementing the bonds to your teeth with a hygienic bonding material (tastes a bit bitter at first) and then the wires are threaded through the bonds and attached by rings on your back molars (unless you aren't getting full mouth braces, in which the last bond serves as the "ring"). The only part I'd class as yucky or painful is when they tighten the wires so the braces do their job-- it feels more like a dull ache than an actual sting or sharp pain. Depending on what work you have to get done, you're going to have to get used to the orthodontist digging around in your mouth. You're also going to have to get REALLY good at cleaning between bonds/underneath nances and retainers and so on. The yuckiest thing for me, while wearing braces, was getting food stuck in them. It was really annoying, because it meant I couldn't eat a bunch of foods I like (popcorn, caramel, corn on the cob, unpeeled apples, and so on). Don't worry, though, because after a few days, you barely even notice you have braces on. You're gonna have to get over your squeamishness about people digging in your mouth, but I find that if I close my eyes and think very determinedly about something else, it doesn't bug me as much.
