or should I worry only about finding a job as an engineer when I graduate?

I taught electronics and electrical engineering in a community college and was a technician for many years; I don't have an engineering degree.

I can say from having worked for many years with engineers that you don't need that experience to be successful, but technician experience is highly practical, and knowing electronics from that perspective would be very useful, and will make you a better engineer. It will certainly make your ability to contribute as an engineer develop much sooner.

If you have the chance to get technical training or experience, and it won't delay your professional education, then by all means do it, but MOST engineers do not have that kind of background, so it is not essential.
