Depends on where you work, but usually no. However, it is up to YOU to determine whether or not you need to be away. If you do call them up, you don't have to give them a reason. Just tell them you won't be coming in today and, if they ask why, just say "it's personal". There is nothing they can do, and will not be able to think you any less for an excuse they might feel isn't credible (which may or may not happen if you give an answer, because it's a matter of opinion). Do not give them an excuse, no matter what.

Absolutely not!! My boss loves to make us suffer. In fact, it is a company wide problem. We get docked on our review for ANY unplanned absence. We have to plan and get approved to be sick even. By girlfriend is diabetic and got really sick so i had to take her to the hospital. I still got in trouble. One time the whole state was in a "state of emergency" for a giant blizzard. The entire state was shut down and the government recommended that no one drive anywhere. Anyone who did not make it into work that night got docked on their next review for it. The next day, the company sent out an email saying that we needed to "get a hotel room" so that we could make it into work in ANY weather. It also said that we should "buy better cars" and "find better daycare for our kids" so we could be at work. These guys would probably laugh at me if my dog died and be more than happy to write me up for it.

Some employeers might not understand that but then some might I'm not sure. Since mine is related to me I don't think it would work.
