The curve describes the ease with which red cells undergo lysis (bursting) in saline solutions. According to the reference below, osmotic fragility is defined as "the ease with which the cells burst in hypotonic solutions and is expressed in terms of the concentration of the saline solution in which the cells are hemolyzed." (A lower concentration implies more fragility.) Ease of bursting is a function of the ratio of cell surface area to volume. The greater this ratio, the more rapidly the cell takes in enough water to burst.
