It depends on your network configuration. Sometimes a proxy isn't needed, such as if you have one computer attached to a broadband modem and a decent software firewall installed on the PC.

Other times, they are absolutely essential, such as when you have a 500-server farm connecting to multiple OC-3 trunks and tens of thousands of applications running millions of inbound and outbound requests through a handful of domain names.

I'd say for the average home user, a proxy is a waste of effort; you can achieve the same net effect with an off-the-shelf router / switch.

Well if you know who is running it then it is fine. If you don't then all sorts of things can be tracked, traced, recorded, invaded.. I think you get the picture.. Using an unknown proxy is a dangerous practice. Like downloading the unknown program.

i use at at school 4 myspace all the time!!! it works for me but they get blocked after a couple days and u have 2 change it constantly 2 be able to work it

what if you need to get your computer fixed at school?
And they find the proxy?
You can get into ALOT of trouble..
