I am attempting to sew vinyl for my pickup truck seat.I see the thread sizes available for this are numbered #69 and#70 at one web site.I dont know what it means or how that corresponds to a needle size. The needle the old singer machine came with was 100/16.What does that mean as well?Help!

Vinyl doesn't sew very well no matter what you use. Here is a site with good advice. Don't worry about the thread size, just go for nylon. #16 needle is ok too. http://www.thriftyfun.com/tf705693.tip.html

sewing machine needles are numbered by size because the larger the size the heaver the material for vinyl a 16 would probably work the best if not try an 11 the thread sizes have nothing to do with what needle you use. the thread sizes indicate the durability of the thread and its strength. for softer materials you would use thinner finner thread but pretty much any thread will work but i would go with the coarser of them
