LIFE is a JOURNEY, not a RACE..
its indeed an exploration.. but not entiely on your own..
you'd need others knowledge to tell you where the cliffs are..
the perilous road to avoid.. the best sceneries hidden beyond the mountains.
& hopefully, you'd learn to SHARE just as well.
have a 1derful Life.. have a meaningful Journey
:-)

I'm just not comfortable about the "getting ahead" part. Seems to have connotations of competitiveness, & self image. Not to say that accomplishing something very well isn't a "worthy" goal. &, wouldn't discovering more about yourself & the world around you faciliate "gettting ahead?"
I'd choose exploration in a heart beat.

I want to put philosophy in the language of business.
In business some manages I have worked with, hate planning. Partly because when they plan, they talk and talk and talk and never move forward.
For me planning is above moving closer to your goal (closeness is measured in terms of distance, effort and time, and mitigated by risk). Stopping to look at a map might actual cost you time, but reduces your risk and in terms of probablity increases the likelihood of arriving faster.
Planning should move you closer to your goal.
Self exploration can be like this, it doesn't move you forward, it just has you going around in circles. We must get ahead. Self exploration is part of that. Stopping for a year to think about what you want to study at university means you don't waste 4 years studying then change your career goals.
So my answer is yes. Do both. If you don't stop to self explore you may move in the wrong direction.

Getting ahead combined with the absence of exploration
seems to be an alternate definition for procrastination.
What is the purpose to get ahead if not to explore?
That said, I believe exploration is more effective when
an individual is ahead. To be ahead is to be free of
debt and outside influence. Therefore, exploration
experiences less inhibition.

Exploration! What's to get ahead of? Of course doing anything as well as you possibly can (and as many things as possible) is the only way to explore. One might be percieved as "getting ahead" in the process; but that, as they say, is collateral damage. Once you know you can do something that well, it's no longer interesting and it's time to change in search of new discoveries - and fun!

Getting ahead of what or who? When time passes by so as your accomplishment. Nothing remains the same, everything is at constant change. Why don't you explore the change instead? I would.....that way I can stay ahead at all time.

Ask yourself, is it better to be a self serving hedonist that is dedicated to greed that can never be fulfilled or is it better to have the wisdom of peace of mind and the ability to have pleasant dreams every night!

You mean intraspection, and exploration?
I feel to get "a head" you must first know yourself to be the "BEST" to be the winner you achieve to be.

Neither. There is no importance that I can assign to any human emotion.
It's like asking which is more important for a dog, to lick it's foot or to lick it's tail. Who cares?

You know, maybe the two are one-and-the-same (i.e. getting ahead is self-discovery).
