This might sound totally crazy, but, I'm at uni & I have important exams in a couple weeks which I am quite stressed about. I'm a naturally very anxious person and it's not neccessarily the exam itself that makes me anxious its the settings, a big hall full of people sitting in silence I worry about nearly anything you can think of that most people don't seem to care about... anyway question is, would it really be so bad if I had a drink before to calm the nerves? obviously I wouldn't get drunk! just enough to feel a little bit relaxed... or if that isn't a good idea, can you reccomend something else? lol

haha I'm not an alcoholic lol I seldom drink, once every few months on a night out to a club for a birthday or something usually. This was just an idea that popped into my head when I was thinking...hmm... what makes me not give a damn about what people think?!

also I am of the legal drinking age in the UK lol

To the person who said it's illegal to be drunk in a public place........ I did quite clearly state I wouldn't get drunk......there's a difference between having one drink & having 9 or 10 lol

I'm starting to think I should have re-worded the question lol

It's not illegal to have a drink before taking an exam.
The real problem is that you believe that having a drink will calm your nerves -- and this is a sign of alcoholism. If you have used alcohol in the past to calm your nerves, I hope you will see a doctor or counselor as soon as possible, as you may need re-hab or therapy.

If you have not been using alcohol and just somehow got that idea into your head, then please use the following techniques instead:
1. Set aside a reasonable amount of time each day to study in a quiet place.
2. Review all of your class notes and any tests that you have the results of. Quiz yourself. Do this with a study-buddy if at all possible.
3. Beginning NOW, keep a regular schedule -- get up at a reasonable hour, eat breakfast, see to it that you have at least 30 minutes of exercise each day, go to bed before midnight.
4. The night before the exam, review your notes one last time, exercise, go to bed by 10 PM.
5. The day of the exam, have breakfast. When dressing for the day, look at your face in a mirror and say -- out loud -- "Okay, Kid. You've done your work and YOU ARE READY!"
6. Just before starting the exam, put both hands on the paper in front of you, take a deep, cleansing breath, and say slowly to yourself, "Calm. Ready. Begin." Then ace it, Sweetie!

In my professional view, its not illegal if you are of age. But under influence of alcohol, as in being drunk, you might get a very bad pickup in the questions for answers and might flunked. Plus, in an exam, you are sitting with many people who can smell the drink on you. Be reasonable, do you want have an exam which you can pass easily but end up getting drunk or half drunk and have a blank memory of what you have studied before. If you want to relax, just recheck your memory for the thing you've studied, stay away from thinking negatively like you're going to flunk it because its a waste of time, seriously. I've been to my finals last month and then I too felt nervous but it falls away when I was busy doing the questions. But I was cold-feet nervous AFTER I had the exam, which is the result day this Tuesday, yikes! Well, if you got drunk when you get your result, its OK. But its not OK when you are drinking BEFORE your exam, thats plain stupid even when you know you wouldn't get drunk.

I would say ask a physician for a one time script for valium or something similar so that there is no question of legality, but it's highly addictive and you wouldn't really have time to gauge the results of taking it before exam time. Have you ever had a drink before an exam? I would be hesitant to try it for the first time for a test. I would be so nervous about the alcohol that it would ruin the sedative effects, plus do you really want to take a test with your brain in a depressed state?

They call this type of thing Alcoholism! Depending on alcohol to get through every day life, is a very basic definition of the disease!

I mean what on earth are you going to do when you get a job and your "stressed" because of work, it is obviously a very poor decision to drink before your test!

Know the material to the best of your ability. Get a good night sleep and relax. Easier said than done I know. I had a professor once that would bring balloons to tests, I never actually did it but it put things in context for me. Tests are merely a chance to show off what you know!

I love how the real answer is a getting all the thumbs down! This is clearly a symptom of alcohol dependency!

I like to think not, because I was seriously drunk when I took ACT, SAT and MCAT and deserved to be arrested for public intoxication, and almost there for FLEX and specialty boards. Worked for me. Of course, that was long ago, and attitudes have changed over the years. I always hated tests like that despite having good results.

Your answer is: YES! It is illegal regardless of age. Look at your campus handbook. You could even be kicked out of the school for simply walking around campus under the influence.
