On a piano you play the melody with your right hand and the chords with your left.
On a guitar you just play the chords and sing the melody.

Actually chords and melodies speak to different concepts, although they both talk about how different notes relate.
With melodies, it's about how different notes played successively (over time) relate. When you whistle, for example, the different notes make the melody. What singers are singing is essentially pure melody.
With chords, it's about how different notes played at the same time relate to one another, creating harmony and something richer than if you just played one note at a time. If you listen to the intro to John Lennon's imagine, the sounds coming out of the piano are chords, 3 notes played simultaneously.
By the way, chords can have more than 3 notes -- in Jazz music they do 4, 5, 7 notes simultaneously. In theory you can do as many as you like as long as they are harmonious (and some people even dispute that).

Chords are specific groups of notes derived from scale, and exist to support melodies. A lot of people don't know this, but the chords to the song are the harmony. When people "sing in harmony", they are building chords with their voices. They are certainly not limited to three fingers (which has nothing to do with what a chord is) though the simplest chords can be played with three fingers, and suggested with two.

I think what they are referring to is this: they base their melodies on the notes stemming from a chord. they get a group of chords and develop a melody from those chords. It is like in guitar when you play the notes individually from a chord instead of strumming the chord altogether.

Chords are not something you do on piano....sorry bro! Melodies are the rhythm and conception you come up with. Chords are the actual "strings in formation" you play. I'm a music major, and if you want to know more, just email me....I'm always open ears to music!

the chords make it sound prettier other than just playing notes on the piano they use chords which adds more effect/volume (i dont know how to explain it) to the sound thus making it sound better which is a cathier/prettier melody
