If you turn the key and it makes a clicking noise and the starter will not move yes its the solenoid!!! It might also be the starter solenoid on top of the starter, check this first. Hope this helps?

The solenoid engages the starter motor and and extends the drive gear in the starter. This action causes the motor to spin and start. The solenoid will not cause the engine to die once it's started. The starter may have a faulty drive gear which will not completely crank the engine which makes it sound like it cranks and stops.

The solenoid will either engage the starter or it wont. If it does, and the car starts, then if it dies it has nothing to do with the solenoid. If it wont, the car wont start in the first place, and you need to check for power to the solenoid with a test light.
