Does anyone have suggestions regarding an antidepressant that has very little side effects - particularly weight gain or constipation? -- I actually only need it to calm nerves in my neck so a natural alternative to calm nerves would be welcome also.

The above suggestions are great but remember with Valerian root. 5% of the population get the opposite result that it is intended. So if you take it and it makes you wide awake you know that you are part of that percentage. Also with St Johns wort. Avoid sun exposure while taking this product to avoid photosensitization. Supplementing daily with a good Essential fatty acid such as fish or flax oil can be a preventative for mood disorders. Skullcap is good for calming nerves. Try meditation as well. And as with any natural supplement please check with your GP for any side effects or contraindicatons with any other medications.Good luck

Anti-depressants: cinnamon, garlic, onion, camomile,
Stronger antidepressants: St. Johns Wort, Hawthorn berries, Valerian!

Note Valerian can put some people to sleep. It knocks me out like a light!

In your neck? First of all, it's silly to even think that an antidepressant would do that, especially an SSRI. Just pick up some Tiger Balm and put it on your neck---works wonders.

For remedies that produce comparatively little side effects, you should use herbal ones rather than synthetic drugs.

You can try St John's wort or Valerian. Get them at your local health store.
