Yep, this happens frequently to those who don't have anti-virus, anti-spyware, a firewall, and a pop-up blocker.
However, it's not really viruses. Viruses you get by downloading something, and then the file duplicates itself infinitely until your computer gets lots of problems. It's most likely an adware/spyware/trojan horse/worm program. These will either:
A) Show annoying ads to you, even when you aren't online
B) Spy on you, steal all your personal information and credit card numbers
C) Mess with your computer so that you get really annoyed. e.g. hijack your home page,
D) Find a security flaw in your computer and exploit it. It will be turned into a "zombie" machine and it'll be rented to an evil man in China.
I advise you to get better protection for your computer, so that things like this will not happen. Stay away from sites with lots of ads like "get a free ipod" and if something sounds too good to be free, it usually is.

Yes, it is possible. Have an up-to-date web browser (with all of the latest security updates), a good anti-virus program (again, with all of the latest security updates), and a firewall help to protect the computer, but aren't foolproof. If your computer is messed up, it's also possibly because of a program that was installed that carried malicious software, or maybe because of a system setting that was changed and shouldn't have been. Like the other answers say, if you visit more dodgy websites you're much more likely to get something.

Yes many websites can cause viruses on your computers especially when you download certain screensavers, games, movies, videos etc. Spyware is also common on these websites. Just make sure you have a firewall and a good virus protector.

It's possible. That's why they have anti- virus programs.
The most probable cause of your computer running like **** is you have SPYWARE. The best FREE program to use (you have to download it) is SuperAntiSpyware. You can click this link and download it: http://www.filehippo.com/download/2161c38e476bb66caf55a9f6f6f4da4e/download/
Once you download it, install it and run a scan. Once it's done, remove all files. Once you do that, restart your computer and turn it back on. It should be running a bit smoother now, if not a LOT smoother.
