The earth is constantly rotating. When the earth is rotating near the sun, that is when we have daylight, when it is not, of course, this is night. Here are some websites that are asking the same question with some answers. It might be interesting to include in your project why some areas have longer days or nights.

The earth rotates on an imaginary axis that goes through the North and South poles. As the earth rotates, a given place on earth will see the sun "rise" and the sun "set." When that place on earth faces towards the sun, that's day. When that place faces away from the sun, that's night.

Of course, when it is daytime where you live, it is nighttime somewhere else, and vice versa.

The earth spins on its axis as it moves in a not-quite-circle around the sun. When your location is on the side of the earth facing away from the sun - which has nothing to do with the earth's movement around the sun - you won't get any light, hence it is night.
Hope that helps! :-)
