My walk behind mower (Briggs & Stratton) will only stay running as long as primer bulb is pumped. For example, one person pull starts the engine, and another person pumps the primer bulb, it will stop running as soon as person stops pushing the bulb. I know it must be a carb problem, but what and how to fix it? Can't afford a new mower at the moment!

Follow the link below. It sounds like you need a fuel filter or the float and needlevalve are stuck(dirty).
I've attached a link that may be of assistance to you. Be sure to know the brand of carburator. I believe most of Briggs and Stratton engines are eqyuipped with Tilotson carbs.

If your carb sits on top of the tank, there is a diaphram under it between the carb and the tank. two bolts hold it on (one needs a 10mm wrench and the other needs a 13mm socket) Twist the assembly sideways to disconnect the throttle link. 4 phillips screws hold carb to tank. Replace the diaphram and reverse the earlier proceedure, and dont forget to reconnect the throttle link. I think this will help your mower!

if the engine isnt making a "wavering" sound its probably just your engine needs to breathe and run good. take the air filter off and keep pressing that primer bulb in to keep the air and fuel mixing rich. if you have one of those primer bulbs with the hole in it and the engine is wavering (this is a redneck fix) take a qtip cut it in half and stick the qtip end (no cotton) in that hole and itll fix the problem while making it run solid.

THE CHOKE!! there is a tiny spring, that controls the choke, and allows engine to run, with out the constant priming,, the spring may have fallen off,,,or gotten snagged, and stretched, ( so it is then useles) Tis spring likes to hide between the carb, and the engine,,but,,takes about one minute to replace. Might coast a quarter for the spring.

rebuild the carb. or maybe more simple. track down your fuel line, check your filter. This is a gravity feed.

Replace the hose and, don't run the mower until you do. It could EASILY catch on fire. Once burning, the gas tank could explode. REALY.
