As large as Koi get, you are looking at hundreds of gallons. One or two would need that much space to swim around comfortably. I really wouldn't suggest anything short of a pond.

you should get a pond. my uncle has a huge pond its so beautiful. it has water running down all of the beautiful mountains and figures. he buys a new koi fish every year on Chinese new year for good luck. but maybe that is a little advanced. I would say you should stick to simpler fish if your a beginner. but to answer your question i would say way over 50 gallons. I hope you have a lot of money to care for koi fish...well if you want a nice pond that is...

Well it will be better to have an outdoor pond. If you cant, you should buy at least a 1000 Gallon aquarium or build the tank on your basemant floor.
