You do realize that under Castro's power there were nuclear missiles aimed at us from Cuba, right? Relations will only improve once there is no longer a Castro in power. Cuba is still a communist country.

He had help from the Soviets. He also had help from the 100,000 Cubans who came to Florida in 1980 during the Mariel boat lift. Plus, the US needed an "enemy" next to her shores to prop up her standing throughout the world. Castro used to be a friend of the US - just like Saddam except that Saddam got the noose while Fidel will receive death by natural causes when he lives to be 105 - mustache, cigar and all.

Why? Well, Fidel has been in power for such a long time for two basic reasons. First off, there's nothing wrong w/ Cuba and the Cubans have nothing to complain about and no one to blame(Fidel). Secondly(and probably the main reason) is that they are scared. Fidel runs his country like Hitler ran Germany, there's no opposition and if there was he would crush it. If you said something knocking Fidel's rule you would get punished.

The Cubans have had a history of communism, such as Noreiga, Batista, and now Castro. They all hold power due to a one-party system.

Throwing anyone who criticized him into prison is one way. Making sure that most of them never left prison alive is another. He just followed the game plan that "Uncle Joe" Stalin used in Russia. Rule with an iron fist but tell the people you love them and are watching out for them (but don't tell them that its the secret police that's watching them). Letting the people know that they are oppressed, hungry and poor because of all those mean capitalist countries not supporting his government. The simple answer - just maintain your country as a puppet of a major communist power.

Mostly because he freed Cuba from a corrupt right wing dictartor (Batista) & the mafia the only problem as soon as he gained power he became a communist dictator himself but not as bad as Batista was to the people of Cuba.

His government was well organized, he was fairly popular, whenever times got tough, he was able to point his finger at Florida and tell them to get swimming. Make no mistake, the guy IS a dictator; I do not believe authoritarianism is the best form of government. But obviously he has made it work for him.

He was the enemy that the US knew.
Just like Wy. Lee Cayote and the big Dog.
It became comfortable.
He remained exactly the same as he was 50 yrs ago.
Cubans were not allowed to leave. Hey , if you were in their shoes, you would give up trying to escape too. Those who succeeded got sent back anyway.
