When society labels it as so.

Beauty and aesthetic appeal are about as different as gender and sex. One is a social description while the other is purely biological. However, that's not to say that the two concepts are interrelated.

jon, I can now see there's no way of having a civil conversation with people like you. You have your own ideas, and they just happen to coincide with mine, but I can't say I disagree with your ideas at all. I completely agree that symmetry of the facial features correlates with aesthetic appeal. BEAUTY itself is when social aspects come into the picture, although aesthetic appeal (and thus symmetry of the facial features) plays a big role in what is beautiful and what is not. The only reason I am arguing is because I resent your uppity arrogance directed toward me and others that are trying to input their own ideas, some of which I agree with and others I don't. Everyone has a right to their own opinons without having some stranger come in and tell them they are stupid and wrong and everyone should study ethology because that is the only field of science worth even glancing over at. I am going to go sit down with a cup of coffee, finish my evolution term paper, and be content with my answer.

When a persons does not meet the subjective standard that one has for beauty. Beauty is usually that which is pleasing to the senses. Ugly is usually the opposite, that which is not pleasing to the senses.

What is ugly is when a person verbally abuses the self and calls themselves ugly, or when someone is verbally abusive and calls another ugly.

Ugly and beauty, though generally used, tend to refer to specific features. There are usually the opposite of what the person does or does not have.

Outer ugliness is a perception. Ugliness to one is beauty to another. As with beauty 'ugliness is in the eye of the beholder' or in the minds of the normal due to the air brushed plastic visions masqueraded as normal or beautiful in magazines these days. True ugliness can only come from inside when someone is selfish, hurtful, inconsiderate etc.

In my opinion, ugliness is not on the outside of someone, it's generally how they act towards others in the world. Ugly people are the ones who make it hard for all the others in their street to live in peace and harmony. They act like they are the most important person in the world and they are the only ones with problems and they could care less about their neighbour, who is ill with cancer - and may soon pass away. That's my slant on it anyway. Keep your chin up - you are probably a lovely person inside - where it really counts.

The only true ugliness is the darkness inside of people and how bad of a person they can be. As far as appearance goes, that cannot be said because how we perceive others or how we are perceived is completely subjective and based on personal preferences. You can enter one room and be seen as the hottest thing they've ever seen. Enter another room and they think you are the 'ugliest' thing they've ever seen. This is actually my own personal experience in fact. If you have a wonderful and warm personality, many many people respond to that and perceive you as being gorgeous because they see the inner light, no matter if people agree on the outside characteristics. The opposite is true as well. In the end, all we can do is accept ourselves and know that other people's perceptions, societies' perceptions are all futile and we are all equal as we are no matter what. There is no ranking among us. Take the time to know yourself and see if you are living to your own standards of inner beauty. And question what you're standards are based on. Is it real or just this fictional idea of what other's describe as how things 'should' be?

..and a warm thankyou to all the ugly people as defined by their replies. The correct answer is when there is a marked departure from symnetry of their facial features This indicates good health and excellent genetic characteristics to carry to the next generation. No, people with large protruding noses, ears or ginger hair, hunchbacks etc however intelligent charming and 'valuable' members of society can by no stretch of the imagination be regarded as acceptable far less beautiful. I mean I have gr8 sympathy for caliban or quasimodo in pop lit, but would u rlly like your sister to marry them?

Psychological studies show that people with smooth and flowing features are considered pretty, or attractive. Those with "chunky" or "jerky" features seem to be the ones that emanate a sense of 'ugly' ( a very cruel term). But, then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

On average, when their fluctuating asymmetry is too great of a percentage.

PS Pris, take some biology at Cal Poly.

I am an ethologist Pris and do not care to have someone who purports to be a biology major so relativistic. Bound feet was a very bad example of attractiveness variation and " slightly chunky ", " very thin " still have symmetry. Pay more attention to your teachers when they explain evolutionary theory and less attention to your humanities and social science teachers. Society and our minds are the result of our biology. Only a sociologist would take a sui generis perspective on society.Get a reality check yourself, relativist.

PS To the rest of you. Beauty is a word meaning, " esthetically pleasing. The things you are describing, such as " inner beauty " have meanings defined in any dictionary.

Now you are the petulant child I knew you would be. Your logic shown to be faulty and your intelligence put to the question. Yes, I am a terrible speller, but only the truth has meaning for me. The truth is this. You are a second rate poser and I do like Canids better than people like you!

If twits like you pass for human, then gladly!!
As for the rest of you; Three correct and considered answers out of 35, so far. The dumbing down of America. Too much social science and humanities and not enough science and math, here.

The biology section is south of here, Pris. ( talk about a pretentious name! ) Put up, or shut up!!
Better yet, women's studies for you. Your style; ideologically driven!
As usual, faulty logic. I was ragging on you!! My mother has been dead too long to be anything, but she would have been ashamed of your fallacious logic, too, I am sure of it. It is past your bed time, little girl.
