I recently removed a flower bed that I seeded with new grass 4 weeks ago that had existing grass next to it. The new grass is growing well, (almost fully grown), but the old grass has alot of clovers, crab grass, dandelions and other assorted unwanted weeds growing. How or what do I use to get rid of all of these unwanted weeds WITHOUT effecting the recently seeded grass? Also I'd like to make the entire lawn grow in thicker and greener. I'm kinda new to gardening and such, so any help offered would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi there! You can buy from your garden center a selective weed killer which will kill weeds such as you mention, but not the grass. You can also "spot " kill with boiling water or steam. They sell a steam weed killer in some shops. But it won't get rid of the weed's root system. New grass should be left for a season, before you fertilise. Then only gently. I think you can get a liquid fertiliser which is good? Otherwise too much feeding will "burn" the top growth. Resulting in strong roots, but little grass.Too much grass also stops water getting to roots. Good Luck!

Lay down a half and half mixture of red granite sand and agricultural grade gypsum pellets/ or powder. This lets seeds germinate faster and opens the soil. The gypsum ties up the salts. The red granite sand acts as a catalyst for dissolving the seed hulls so the seed germinates easier.
As to the weed removal.: Put half a cup of straight Roundup with 1 gallon of water. Dip a sponge mop in the bucket mixture. Water(sprinkle) the weeds first. Then apply your mop on them. it's better than spraying the stuff and having the wind drift it on to your new grass.

As far as the existing weeds in your new grass, any application of weedkiller will kill the new grass. To make your lawn thick with little hassle spray a combination of equal parts regular Miracle Gro and Miracle Gro for lawns each time you mow your lawn. About one cup (dry) of the combination should do it.
