I'm in high school. Looking for a career involving the sciences in which I could help the world, the people in it, ANIMALS, the environment, I want to DO something, hands on. I'm likely to get at least a Master's Degree in college. I've thought of being a vet, sounds kind of repetitive and sad putting down animals. A doctor >> you have to go to college so long and work so much you wouldn't have much of a life outside. Looking for something that is worthwhile and great employment. Any ideas??? Thanks!

How about something like Marine Biology? There are many new species being discovered at the very depths of the oceans, and maybe you could discover one yourself! This type of environment interfaces with work in the space program, because the lessons we learn from the ocean (especially at great pressures / depths), we can apply to hostile environments in space.
Also, since the world is running out of fresh water, we'll have to learn how to tap into the ocean to desalinate it in large quantities to green the deserts, and make sure that there is fresh, clean water for future generations.
{And, contrary to some opinions out there, mankind is not the cause of "global warming"--there is NO "consensus" by the scientists on it. Mankind, the animals, and other life on this planet all benefit when mankind keeps advancing technology, innovations, and creates new resources for the ability to live at greater standards of living}

As for your question, I am pursuing a degree in Vet Med and my sister is a MD doc. Being a vet and a doc make differences because we handle human and animal lives although it doesn't seem to matter to the world but to them it does. Thats the reason I'm taking Vet other than the helplessness I felt for these animals because some people who loves mistreating them think it was nothing. As for euthanasia, if the animal have a medical condition without any solution to ease their pain cause it causing the animals to die painfully and horribly without any words that we can hear from them, euthanasia might be a solution for their owner, not a vet, if we can find a cure, we will. But for human, of course, theres millions of reason why we must not but can for the animals. Cruel isn't it?

If you want to make a differences in the world, try recycling, be nice to people, be a nice person, help when needed, do kind things... and all that for a start. You could apply biotech, biomedicine or some areas that involved in making things or techniques for mankind which mostly involve research. If you can get high grades, there are many in social medicine and also broad research areas like Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

But you need to think this way. Some things that might make a difference mustn't be high paying as well. But take accountings or economy if you want high paying because science and health might not be for you. (Because machine requires loads money too)

First, choose something you're good at. Then look for ways to use your expertise to help others and the world. For example, becoming and accountant may not seem particularly world changing; however, the Habitat for Humanity needs accountants. You could become a biomedical engineer, and create medical instruments that help doctors to save lives. Environmental engineer focus on environmental issues such as chemical waste. Whatever you choose there is always a need for model citizens who care about the people in their community.

Start by making your immediate world a better place, & the answer to the larger picture will come naturally.

Be honest, be loyal & be true.
Be kind & show compassion.
Be respectful & tolerant of others.

These such things will immediately help make the world a better place.

"Let us more and more insist on raising funds of love, of kindness, of understanding, of peace. Money will come if we seek first the Kingdom of God - the rest will be given."
