Let x be the length of the shorter piece.
Then the length of the longer piece is x + 10
So the total length is:
x + (x + 10) = 98
2x + 10 = 98
2x = 88
x = 44
x + 10 = 54

One piece is 44in and the other is 54in. Add together to give 98in.

To solve this, you halve 98 to get 49. If the difference between the two should be 10, you therefore go 5in lower (to get 44in) and also 5in higher (to get 54in).

Voila, problem solved.
