how does construction cleaning work, does it happen when the builders have set up the buildings, or when erecting structures??

Thank you for both your answers you,ve answered my question, but I have another.

For a build of roughly 100 flats or 20 houses, from your judgement how many cleaners would you need? plus do you need to have risk assessments, standards via coshh to work in this field?

It usually works in several stages, but depends on the builder. A common format is:

After completion of framing, completion of trades rough-ins (plumbing, electrical), completion of drywall, and final completion. Some contractors will also require you to clean up the site after foundations, but generally this is done by the foundation crews. For the most part, it is just cleanup of wood cutoffs, a site tidy-up, and sweeping the house. After completion of rough-ins, most contractors will require a good cleaning between the studs, so it is tidy when the insulation batts are installed. Final cleaning will consist of window washing, vacuuming, dusting, wiping hard surfaces, wiping down walls, and "Swiffering" the hard floors, and some will do an exterior pressure wash (if you provide this service). Here in BC, chargout for a complete service (framing to finish in the different stages I mentioned) is between $0.25 and $0.35 per square foot.

Where I live, 'construction cleaning' is considered the final cleanup of the property after all construction is completed. That includes washing windows, cleaning cabinets of sawdust, vacuuming floors, closets, and anything else where the remnants of construction are to be found. As we both know, carpenters and trades people are not in the habit of carrying brooms around.

There are several smaller businesses here which specialize in such clean up work. They seem to do well.
