so many films are about drug gangs, murders, cops, war, blah, blah, its great when someone finally tackles a rare theme, something really different, like say donny darko. Any others?

A great French film called Amelie about a shy girl looking for romance - one of the best movies I've ever seen - and I've seen a lot of movies. Ghost Dog was pretty cool as well - it's about a modern day samuri whose only friend can't speak English, well worth checking out.

The Spanish original version of Vanilla Sky called Abre Los Ojos / Open Your Eyes (which blows the remake out of the water) is also a different kind of movie.

Lost In Translation and Empire Records are different to the usual kill/drugs/sex movies going around, but may be an aquired taste...

I'll add a few to the list:

Suspect Zero - Movie that deals with the supposed ability of psychic locating. Stars Ben Kingsley and is a real good show.

The Usual Suspects - The first time I watched it, I was blown away by the ending. Great flick that just gets better with repeat showings.

Shade - It's about poker hustling. Who can out-hustle the hustler?

Pump Up the Volume - Pirate radio show takes on a life of it's own when it becomes popular with the youth of a suburban town.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Metropolis, by Fritz Lang. Note: rent or buy the version that has had the contemporary soundtrack added and the digital restoration (the film was made in the thirties). This is the single most unique film I have ever seen.

Pans Labryinth expected it to be a kids film. Watched most of it from behind a cushion, was not expecting the violence. Brilliant story, filming, special effects, very dark. Thought about it for ages after and that Pale man thing was vile.

Hammer house of horrors/English movies from the 60/70s are the most original.
when we think a modern movie is original and find that its not at all, ie; Pulp Fiction was modelling on an old movie.
Have a check out of the old horrors from the past!!!
Oh and Psycho one, was a gr8 movie, however it is based on Real Events!!!!( did anyone else know that?!)

the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind
it jumps around a bit and is very confusing but very funny and very endearing if you can hope to keep up but if you've seen donny darko then you might manage it it's just as confusing but a lot less dark

Jonathan Livingston Seagull. About a seagull who evolves to a higher level of consciousness ! Has got to be the most original film ever.

Battle Royale.

It's in subtitles for us uneducated people, but a very good film.

Class of school kids have to kill each other to survive on an island over watched by the Chinese military.

Very good film.
