Get Earnie Ball strings. Slinky's perferably. They are very smooth, easy to keep in tune, sound great and versatile. For the amp get something like a Roland Cube or something. Or even i would say for 200-300 i would say get a Line 6 Spider III. They are cheap, in that price range, fancy but give you great output and alot of volume.

Classical strings are nylon, not metal. The strings on a western guitar (like a martin) are metal but are different then what you would use on a strat for example. This all has to do with the pickups, body composition, etc. Most strings have a core which is round wound on the 6, 5, 4 and sometimes third strings (E A D G). The 2 and 1 are not wound, the material used on nylon strings can be a type of metal. Some players prefer flat wound, which are smooth when you run your fingers on them. The preference is for tone however.

Try GHS Boomers. I've been using them for 25 years and they seem to have the best longevity. They go about 8 bucks a set depending on the store. You can get a Fender Champ amp for under $300. I've got a Yamaha keyboard that I bought at Best Buy for $115. It does all kinds of things and is a great tool for home recording. It's got over 150 preset sounds and 100 different drum tracks.

Hi. Different strings will have different sound. Especially between flat wound and conventional bronze wrapped. If you can get to a guitar shop, listen to a few. For my Guild D-35 acoustic I always liked Goya strings.
