I can't tell you much about the history of racism as an academic matter. I've never made a systematic study of it. But I do have a few thoughts that are more intuitive and grounded in logic than they are grounded in research.
First, I believe that racism is rooted in human nature. That is, it is natural for human beings to take note of the salient characteristics of other human beings whom they encounter in the ordinary course of everyday living.
Race is such a salient characteristic: It is noticed almost immediately by everyone.
I also believe that it is natural for human beings of all races subconsciously to favor other human beings who share their own salient characteristics and, if not to disfavor, at least to remain neutral or possibly even skeptical toward other human beings whose salient characteristics are the most egregiously different from their own.
The most unfortunate consequence of these workings of human nature is that human nature itself is probably impossible to change; and the initial impressions of others created in each of us by the workings of human nature are therefore, while not impossible to change, nevertheless very difficult to change.
But changes in our individual perceptions of others are likely to be possible as a realistic matter only if we are able to overcome our initial reactions towards each other and get to know each other well enough to penetrate our differences and see clearly through to our common humanity.
This will enable us to understand the invalidity of our initial impressions, but it takes effort, and proximity, and interaction, and a willingness to extend and accept friendship.
Once we have established true friendships with people of races different from our own, it will be impossible ever again to think of our friends of other races as anything but our friends, period.
At that point it becomes possible, realistically for the first time, to contemplate success in overcoming and neutralizing in our own relationships the toxic residual effects of our own all-too-human nature.

Ancient texts rarely mention race although their were all races present in and around the Mediterranean from early times. People did make distinction based on language, tribe and country of origin but skin color as such did not seem to matter. Slavery was common but it was a result of loosing a war and all races were made slaves.Sometimes but not always the slave owners justified the taking of slaves by beliefs of the inferiority of the slave group. Slavery in Europe slow;y died out so by the middle ages it had almost disappeared and church teaching that keeping slaves was wrong was generally accepted. With the discovery of the Americas and the profits available created a need for labor on the plantations which could only be met by enslaving Africans. To justify this practice a theories of race was developed that placed Africans at a lesser level of humanity than Europeans. Over the next 300 years this was embedded in the cultures of countries that had large slave populations.

Racism has existed since the beginnings of mankind. This is one basis of wars in early history. The USA did not invent this but imported the problem before the nation was even a nation and still a colony.
It is still active today with national organizations based just on skin color. NAACP, United ***** Fund, Black Miss America, even the Black Congressional Caucus for black Representatives and Congressmen, to name just a few.
Minorities find it very useful to keep race an issue with the Federal government. Affirmative action programs, preferred loans for small minority owned businesses, Educational preferences for college placement are just a few of the advantages blacks have over the "white" majority.
Hispanics also have any number of groups and also set aside programs just for them.
The USA will have an interesting event happen in the next 10 years. The minority of Hispanics will out number the "white" population and "white" people will become a minority. It will be interesting to see if laws are changed to reflect this.

It was started by Jewish Americans in the 60s to create tension between blacks and whites. This allowed the Jews to take total control of the Federal Government.
