I own both, so you can expect a fair answer from me. Each type of guitar has its own different sound, so you don't buy the guitar for the brand name - you buy it for the sound that you want. Also, there are a lot of different Fender and Gibson models, so comparing the guitars by brand name only is kind of like comparing Ford against Chevy - depending on which year and make of car you are talking about, some are better than others. The Fender guitars have a longer "scale length" (25.5" for the standard models) and the Gibson electrics have a 24.75" scale length, but the Gibson acoustics usually have a 25.5" scale length. The pickups, the wood, the way the guitar is built, the type of finish (nitrocellulose lacquer versus polyurethane) all make a difference, and even the same kind of guitar from the same company made on the same day is still not going to be exactly the same as one just like it because it is using different wood. I would go to a music store that sells both and try them both out and see what YOU like best if you are trying to decide on what to buy. Ignore the statement that Gibson has higher quality than Fender - the guitars like the Eric Johnson Stratocaster are comparable in quality to the Gibson Les Paul Standards. Get what YOU like, and enjoy!

Both =P
I can't choose. Gibson's quality is better but Fender was my first so I'm attached to it.

Both are legends for sure, but for overall looks & elegance, Gibsons win it for me. They're just good *looking* guitars! The Les Paul, ES models, the double-necks, the Hummingbird & J-200 acoustics, etc...

Gibson is higher quality; it is also higher priced. You get what you pay for.
