In philosophical circles, this philosophy is usually referred to as dualism. One of the more commonly cited evidences of dualism is light and dark. There's a problem with that, though. 'Dark' does not really exist.

If dark was a thing, you could make more of it. You could move it from place to place. It would have some quality of measurability and tangibility. All of these things are true for light. None of them are true for dark.

You can only make dark by removing light. This is what dark IS. When we say 'dark', all we mean is that there is no light. This supposed dualism is thus just that of existing or not existing.

The idea, then, that nothing can exist without its so-called opposite is just another way of saying that nothing can exist unless it can also not-exist. Which isn't too informative. And it's not even true on that level.

Consider space. That thing which contains other things. Where is there a place where space does not exist? Such a thing cannot be indicated if it does exist (how do you give directions to something that can't be in a place?) and it's difficult to even imagine. Thus space exists without an opposite.

Dualism is false. Things exist or they don't, and divisions within existance are completely arbitrary. Reality is not so accomodating.

Yin Yan or Ying Yang is an Eastern philosophy found in at least Korea, see their national flag, and China. One of their tenants is that all life is a balance, kind of an emotional for each action there is an equal an opposite reaction.
