James Madison was in office when the white house was set on fire. The British entered Washington and set fire to the white house and the capitol. British troops set fire to the White House in 1814, but it was spared due to a two hour rainstorm. Both the interior and exterior suffered extensive damage. It took three years for the reconstruction to be completed .
