to split the defense, as mentioned, is for the ball handler to penetrate two or more defenders while going to the rim.
splitting the defense can lead to:
a) penetration or drive all the way to the rim for a layup/dunk. think dwyane wade, lebron james, vince carter, or any other player fond of getting to the rim.
b) collapsing the defense altogether. this means forcing the other defenders to help out on the penetrator, causing them to leave their other defensive assignments. when this happens, the ballhandler can make the pass to the open man under the rim for a dunk or to a teammate on the perimeter for the shot. examples of these are steve nash, jason kidd.

Ahh, we got ourselves a baller. I hoop it up some.
Its when your on offense and seperate the players. You send them in all different directions of the arc so they are far away from each other. This way, when the D is playing man on man they go out instead of stay each other. Giving the ball handler a one-on-one match with the defender. Dwyane Wade and they Heat do this all the time.
