Almost all the big chain fast food places understand that it's the kids that drag the parents in. Why? Because they want a new toy. These companies are legendary for creating a series of toys that are released weekly (e.g. associated & timed with a new movie).

Fast Food knows no sane parent would choose fast awful food over their local mediocre full service restaurants. So then, why don't the mediocre full service restaurants understand that the free kids meal isn't a significant enough bait to draw customers? Wouldn't you think they'd figure out that the toy formula (i.e. dangle the carrot) works much better? Advertisors seem to know you work the kid to get to the parent. Why don't full service restaurants get it?

As sad as it is, America has become Fast Food Nation, the only solution I could think of with regards to this problem is to continuously Educate everyone ( most especially the parents) about this growing problem...

...I know for a lot of homes with both parents working 9-5 sometimes overtime, it is really hard to juggle cooking for the kids and work, If buying "Take-Outs" is their last resort, I think people should always make the conscious decision of choosing the healthy options that Fast Food's are now offering.

But going back to your point, Fast Foods somehow perfected the formula of attracting kids and luring them into convincing their parents to go buy one of the "Happy Meals" , again the only solution I can think of is - "Educate the public"

Parents are usually on the run when they hit a fast food joint for a kids' meal (and toy).

Not only does the child eat, but s/he is actually quiet for a few minutes, distracted by the toy, and not asking if we are there yet.

If I am taking the time to take The Boy to a full service restaurant, the last thing I want is to have him distracted and trying to play with a toy, rather than practicing his manners and participating in the experience.

I do carry the Gameboy or DS, in case his patience runs low, but toys -- actual toys -- are never permitted at the table (GB/DS fall into the same category as cell phones, PDAs and Blackberries -- parenting has to be consistent with your own behavior).

It's all about the money, check out the ingredients that they put into that food, it's scary! I mean research it! Check out fast food nation. I wouldn't eat at another fast food restaurant & don't eat out only because of the msg they use to make it tasty & make you hungrier & hungrier! But that is just me. They don't care about anyone but the money, & if they can put some cheap toy in it to keep the parents coming back they will stoop so low.
