In regards to publishing houses, does anyone know which book editors handle which subjects. I've checked out the writers market and other publications and although they tell the name of a publisher and what they handle, they never say which editor specifically handles a certain subject.

You can always call to ask. They'd rather you call and find out the proper editor to send to than waste their time and yours shuffling your query and/or manuscript around their offices. Go ahead and call - as long as you are JUST asking which editor to direct your query to. Don't push your luck and pitch your book!

Usually the editor you would want to contact is called the book editor. Editors in chief seldom deal with submissions, and the hierarchy from there down spreads through several editors. As the previous person said, call the company and ask. Most editors handle all subjects, unless the company has divisions within (they say so in the Writer's Market) and believe it or not, some of us are with the same company for 10 years or more. :)

Here are my two suggestions:
1) Find books similar to yours in topic and look on the acknowledgment page to see if the author thanked their editor (they usually do).
2) Get an agent. It's their job to know which editors take what. Most publishers won't allow you to submit without an agent anyway. Check out agentquery.com to see which agents are taking what you write (memoir, medical, etc).

You would really need to contact the publishers directlly for that information. Editors come and go so quickly in the world of publishing, their names often change weekly!
