For the answerer above me, my mother once called in because there was a family crisis (there actually WAS, my great grandmother had died) and her boss was such a jerk that she demanded a funeral card or proof of my great grandmother's death!!!!
So I would go with the traditional "I'm stuck at the airport because I was on a weekend vacation." if it's a Monday (that one works, because there is no way it's your fault that the plane is delayed, etc.) OR, if your boss is evil and will demand a plane ticket, just say that you have a doctor's appointment. Another good one is saying that your sister just got broken up with by her fiance, and she is crying her eyes out and is going suicidal so you can't leave her side. That usually gets some sympathy. Unless your sister is married.
Good luck, and remember don't make up what you can't back your way out of. For example. don't say, "I'm in Canada on a trip" and be in a restauraunt in eye shot of your boss's office.

Sudden mega toothache, sunburn so bad you cant wear a shirt or short..., your wife giving birth, your house being on fire, your car being stolen, your block sealed off by the whatsit squad, The main water in yr house having sprung a leak, your plane is delayed coming back from Amsterdam... Have nice day off!

Your drunk and have a problem with alcohol. They cant fire you and have to organise rehabilitation which could lead to more days off work plus has the added bonus of you can actually have a few drinks in the future and blame it on a relapse :-)

Tell them that you have just developed a really unsightly rash and you are not sure what it is so you aren't sure if it is contagious... you need to see a doctor immediatly!
