I would get it replaced immediatly for the simple fact of where it is on the front of your car. there is no way of telling on how long it will last or has been there. If it blows you could have a major accident. Usually you can pick up a good set of tires for about 300 bucks depending on where you live. Once again i would get them replaced ASAP.

If there is metal showing underneath, no matter which part of the tire its from, you should treat it as a high risk. This tells you that it is too deep and has the metal piece exposed which can affect other parts of the tire. Just like a crack in the windshield; if you dont treat it right away it could expand and cause more serious damage not just to the winshield but the driver as well. So I suggest you do change the tire, especially as we are entering into hotter days which will most definetly have an effect on your tires. Look into JustTires, Goodyear, Michellin, and even Sam's Club to get an estimate on four tires. It could range from $200-500 with full service.

If you can see the steel belt material of the tire, you should get the tire changed ASAP. Do some shopping around for your vehicle, different tire shops will have different prices on the tires, the installation, road hazard warrenty, balancing, valve stems and misc labor or waste handling fee (sometimes called a tire disposal fee) As I remember, the Elantra had a 14 inch rim size and a 15 inch rim option... you can find out for sure by taking the vehicle to a tire shop or your dealership and asking for the size. They will look at a tag normally found on the drivers door or doorjam area. Settle for a good M+S all season tire and you should drive happily for many more miles. Good luck.

Don't take a chance on your tires splitting open completely. I just recently bought 4 205/60/15 H rated all season tires for a total of $208 (delivered price). It cost another $62. to install and balance the tires, with new valves.
The place I bought them (on line)

oooops! sounds like ya got a totally worn out tire. what you describe is the first of two steel belts that make up the tire. you are so wrong about that part not being where the load is also.during cornering maneuvers the heaviest loaded part of the tire is what actually wears out first. if its wearing on the edge, ya probably got an alignment problem as well. i suggest popping the spare on and head for a tire shop pronto where between 2 and 3 hundred bucks will get ya a new set of standard tires and an alignment. risking your own life on a bad tire is bad enough but please don't take me or my kids out with ya when it blows. just get it taken care of and stay safe

That tire should be replaced - sidewalls, believe it or not, actually carry quite a bit of stress during cornering, stopping and acceleration.
If you see steel showing, the tire is seriously compromised. Hopefully you won't need to drive at freeway speeds to get to a tire shop!

It is driveable around town but avoid high speeds. The steel cord is still intact. You may have cut it on a curb or something. If you are thinking about new tires do it sooner rather than later as the prices are going up rapidly due to higher fuel for transportation, yaddah. I put two new ones on my wife's car and they increased $ 40.00 apiece in price in the course of two weeks. The longer you wait the more they will cost.

"Its on the outer edge of the tire and does not take the full force of the cars weight like the center of the tire would."... hmm it seems to me, if your knee was broken your foot wouldn't hold you up would it?
ive seen high speed blowouts... if you had you wouldnt even ask such a question.

It wasn't slashed, your tire is ply separating!!!!!
What you are describing is a huge wound and the description indicates the tire is starting to come apart. I only see ply separations every single day working as I do in a tire shop so I know of which I speak.
Change them immediately.
