I just recently started using checks, so please PLEASE don't make fun of me, I have absolutely no idea who takes them and who doesn't. So do clothing stores like Kohls, The Buckle, American Eagle, etc. take checks? And say my boyfriend has the checkbook...can I just take some more checks and use them or do they need to be used in order?

Okay, so first thing you need to do is go to the bank and request another card with your name on it. If it's a joint account, there should be no problem for them to issue another for you...honestly, I'm surprised they didn't do it automatically.

Almost every retail store will take a check. You'll probably need to show picture ID, but otherwise, it should be that easy, really. In general, if they don't take checks, they'll have a sign posted that clarifies this. Most restaurants and gas stations won't take a check (and most will have a sign posted that clarifies this policy).

A lot of stores do not take checks, or at least didn't in the past, but now more do because they run them through a credit machine like you are using a credit card, and that money is taken from your account right that second when the check goes through. As for whether the stores you are asking about take them, it would depend on each store. And no, you do not need to use the checks in order, but make sure you keep track of what you write them for and spend - overdraft charges are EXPENSIVE!

Checks are more likely used to pay bills, rather then using at the stores. Did you receive a debit visa card with the account you open. Because that is what you want to use when you shop. Just make sure to keep track of what you spend because it will be deducted out of your account almost immediately. Most places don't except checks any more, use them only on bills, paying your hair dresser, and government places, otherwise use your debit visa card.
