It makes no sense. Picard is the better captain because he was such an excellent diplomat. Kirk was brave but reckless and impulsive.

Kirk was a captain back in the earlier days when the "final frontier" was still more of a frontier than a well mapped conglomerate of nations. Thus, Kirk was more of an adventurous type, compare him to a wild west hero. Picard was more of a diplomat and cerebral captain, which had better merit for the later time frame of TNG. Both captains were good for the time period and style of the show at the time, and some people (not me, but I can understand) probably like Kirk better simply because the ballsy adventurer archetype appeals to them more.

Yes but kirk was from a younger generation before it was as established as when Picard was there. He had to be the way he was! Also Kirk was way hotter in his day and got all the women! Even the weird green woman! Now that is a captain!!

Captain James Tiberius Kirk WAS the first, original and therefore the best Captain of the Starship Enterprise.
Picard was good ....but can't beat Kirk!!

lol Captain Kirk kicked --- and took names. Kirk was no slouce in the mind either. Thats probably why people like him.

All of the above mentioned reasons...AND...he showed way more nipple!!!LOL His shirt got cut in dang near EVERY episode!
