Okay, there's this one girl at my school who acts like my friend most of the time, but she's not! I'm 13 (in 8th grade) btw. Any way, me and her both take all honors, get really good grades, are in band, and are kind of similar. So this makes her feel like she's competing with me. Everything we do is like a competition to her. I don't try to compete back, but she makes me so mad when she rubs things in my face. And she's always trying to be so different from the crowd. She has really short hair that she wears in two ponytails everyday, and all she wears are loose tee-shirts with basketball shorts. And instead of signing yearbooks normally, she puts Curious George and Berenstein Bears stickers! She's 14!! And I have a lot of friends and a lot of guys flirt with me and stuff, and she gets like really jealous. She's always trying to make guys pay attention to her instead of me, and it gets so annoying!! And I made up this fake holiday at school....

....just to have fun and stuff since school's almost out. And she's like people all think you're retarted. I mean what kind of 8th grader makes up 'Lemon Day?' This is coming from the girl who dresses like a guy and gives out Curious George stickers! I felt like telling her off right then and there. Instead I was like, "Well, I don't really care if you think my holiday's stupid. I think it's fun and that's all that matters." And she wins everything! She won girl of the year and mock trial best witness award. And she doesn't rub it in totally, but she does it discretely. I seriously HATE her! What should I do about her? She's probably gonna be in a lot of my classes next year and she's in my band! I really want to tell her off!

I think a slightly more psychological aproach is more called for. It will take some skill on your part, and some bravery, but I think it works best. When she tries to focus the attention on herself, help her, shout quite loudly: Look everyone! Here is ..... isn't she wonderful??? then shut up and let nature take it's course... when it happens again? Loudly say: Hey everyone, The Queeeeeen is back!!! she really needs the attention doesnt she?? then shut up again..... applaud her, giver her more attention than she can handle, make sure everyone immediately knows if she wins before she can say it herself..... do you get the idea? you might come up with some of these youself along the way... it is amazing what effect it can have to give a sort of mirror to her by exaruating her behaviour. but don't overdo it... use your wits, make others laugh at your jokes at her expense... but again, don't overdo it. Remain respectful and control your anger. There are weird people in the world and you can't go round yelling at every single one of them. You either learn to deflect them, handle them, talk them under the table, laugh at them or ignore them, but if you get mad, you are always the guilty party... so don't if you can in any way avoid it..... You sound like the one with the better mind in not wanting to compete with her and I applaud you for that. keep that up. just because she is a *** doesnt mean you have to become one. be a bit classier yourself, just by choosing so... (sorry for the long reply... I hated those kind of kids too when I was in school.... beat them though with just a tiny bit of psycology... ) :)

If your question is, "What should I do to make myself feel better or to deal with this?" then here you go.

When she tries to rub things in your face, not only tell her that you don't give a crap, but just think about this. If she gets like a 96% on her test and you get a 90%, just tell yourself, "It doesn't matter. It's not gonna scar me for life and it doesn't matter that much at all." I try that and it works. I do that when I feel embarrassed and I just say to myself, "It just happened. Nothing else. It's just a past event that doesn't matter."
