There is a moderately large, kind of oblong beetle that lives in rotting logs called a Passalid beetle (they have a lot of odd common names, like Bess Bug or Puss Bug). They have a small hook on the head and tufts of reddish fur at the leg joints; very cool-looking. Anyway, they make a definite squeaking noise when picked up or disturbed. Another beetle that does this, but not yours, is the medium-sized, red Milkweed Beetle that you see on Milkweeds (surprise!) in the late summer. They're pretty loud.
I'm not sure what yours is without a more detailed description or photo to look at.

It is probably a pine beetle (Family: Cerambycidae). They have long, often slender bodies with antennae as long as to nearly twice as long as their body. They make a squeaking noise by rubbing their head and notum together. Google cerambycidae and check out the photos.
