Your online application is your only chance to make a first impression. so yes, I think they are essential. It makes you look more professional and give the employer a better impression of who you are and depending on the type of job, they will want to know what your letter writing skills are like. Don't repeat information already in your resume, just keep it simple, this is me, here is my resume, I am available for interviews and look forward to meeting you.

Yes! I'm a firm believer that first of all, you never send anyone a standard resume. Resumes should be adjusted for each job that you are applying for - helping them to read specifically to the skills, experience, and education you have that applies to that job. Then, add a cover letter. Explain why you are perfect for the job, highlight the important aspects of your resume, and ask point black for an interview. These things, combined, always got my attention when I was hiring. Good luck!

Depends on the firm. If it's a small business then it's probably worthwhile. Larger firms or HR agencies it's a waste of time as they have strict procedural methods to process applications so if a cover letter isn't called for, it's just tossed in the trash when they receive it.

Yes, it is your introduction and a short summary of who you are. It is to build interest in your resume. Have someone else read over your cover letter so you can get an independent opinion of it. Try to mention what you can bring to the job.

It is always a good idea. If the job offer asks for it, yes, you do. It is a good idea to customize them to the specific job you are applying for, and not use the same for all positions.

No, but they do help. It's better to have one. I keep one saved on my computer then change it as needed for the job I'm applying to.
